New Use for an Everyday Object

This week I chose to examine the paper clip.
The simple, unassuming paperclip
While scouring the web, I found a great use for a paperclip that I had not ever thought up before. All it takes is to bend the paperclip like so...

And it makes a great tool to clean out between the keys in your keyboard ;

I think if I were to redesign the paperclip doe the specific purpose of cleaning keyboards, I would make them magnetic. As well as being able to pick up metal things from between the keys, it would be a lot easier to keep them together in a desk drawer or something like that.

  1. Dear Cory,
    I use my paper clips as picks some too! I think it is a great idea to make them magnetic because I tend to get other paper clips stuck in the keyboards sometimes. However, I wonder how you can prevent your paper clips from becoming too distorted that you can't use them as paperclips anymore. After you bend them how are you going to make sure your paperclip can be bent back into its original form?

  2. Hi Cory,

    You're awesome.
    This is a problem that everyone has, especially those who enjoy a snack whilst working.
    Have you considered making one end of the paper clip somewhat adhesive? All the big chunks of junk actually fall out if you hold your keyboard upside down and shake vigorously. Its the little dusty granules that really drive me nuts, they'd need some tape to get out.
    The problem as a system though, is that after using a paper clip (whether adhesive or not) to clean a keyboard once... it's unlikely you'd want to use that paperclip again for anything productive.

  3. This is a different way of using a common everyday object, the paper clip. However paper clips probably deserve a list of dozens of of uses, not just one. In fact, there are a plethora of web sites dedicated to the paper clip, like “101 Uses for a Paper Clip” at http://www.xrysostom.com/paperclip.html. I do have one observation regarding this use of a paper clip though. Won’t the pointed tip of the clip find difficulty picking up the fine dust that normally collects in those keyboard crevices? Also, regarding a magnetic clip – seriously, how often do people drop ferrous metal objects in their keyboard? All in all, this is a good start, but the idea will probably need more development.

  4. I use paper clips in the same sort of fashion. Making them magnetic would help out trying to pick up certain small items that are stuck inbetween small spaces. This might not help in all situations especially around laptops because there is too much electronics that could stop functioning if near a magnet.
